Josef Eksl

Josef Eksl (born August 16, 1909 in Vienna ; † November 18, 2000 there ) was an Austrian trade union education functionary.

Life

Even during his apprenticeship as a commercial clerk, Eksl was involved in the trade union movement and in social democracy , as well as their armed arm, the Republican Protection Association . After 1934, Eksl was an illegal union member and was imprisoned for several months. In 1938 Eksl had to flee his hometown because of his Jewish origins and lived in Belgium, France and Switzerland until 1946. In 1946 he returned to Austria and resumed his trade union activity. His numerous functions included his work as a councilor in the Vienna Chamber of Labor . In 1972 he took over the management of the education department of the ÖGB , which he joined in 1956. From 1959 to 1978 he was the managing director of the Vocational Promotion Institute, an institution for professional development. In 1964 Eksl took over the IT department of the ÖGB. In 1972 he was elected President of the International Federation of Workers' Education.

Eksl was the author of numerous publications and recipient of high awards. In 1974 he was awarded the title of professor by the Federal President. In 1980 he received the City of Vienna Prize for Public Education and in 1982 the Austrian State Prize for Adult Education (appreciation prize). Eksl's daughter was the politically active Gabrielle Traxler .
