Gabrielle Traxler (born September 16, 1942 in Digne-les-Bains ; † July 21, 2015 ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and a member of the Austrian National Council from 1983 to 1994 .

education and profession

The daughter of the social democrat and trade union activist Josef Eksl was born in emigration and attended the Lycée Français de Vienne , from which she graduated in 1961 with the Matura. She then completed office courses in shorthand, typing and accounting. She worked as a typist in a veneer factory and was a secretary at the French cultural institute "Institut Francais". She also worked as a specialist group secretary in the hotel, hospitality, personal service (domestic and home helpers department) and later women's secretary for the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions. From 1989 to 1992 she was in charge of the International Eastern Division of the ÖGB. Following her political career, Traxler entered the real estate industry. She completed her training as a real estate broker and shortly afterwards founded her own brokerage company SOL Immobilien. In the mid-2000s she expanded her company into French-speaking Switzerland. Parallel to her work in the real estate sector, she was heavily involved in social projects in Vienna. Among other things, she set up two social associations - the "Zukunft Familie" association was dedicated to family counseling and the "We help" association was heavily involved in caring for and housing the homeless. With the support of the City of Vienna, it was even possible to rent 9 social flats during the busiest period, which were set up as shared apartments for homeless people and helped numerous people to gain a foothold again.

politics

Traxler joined the SPÖ in 1956 and was a functionary of the Association of Socialist Middle School Students. She held the function of chamber councilor in the Chamber for Workers and Salaried Employees for Vienna and represented the SPÖ from 1978 to 1983 in the Vienna City Council and the Vienna State Parliament. On June 1, 1983, she moved to the National Council and subsequently held the function of SPÖ family spokeswoman. After the newspaper Daily Everything had claimed in autumn 1992 that Traxler had illegally dismissed an employee while she was on sick leave, Traxler was deposed as family spokeswoman and resigned from the SPÖ. Traxler himself saw the allegations as part of a defamation campaign by the SP club against her. However, Traxler also came under fire when she received unemployment benefits in addition to her parliamentary salary after the end of her employment with the ÖGB. Traxler justified this step with the otherwise missing insurance cover and that the employment office would have awarded her the money without her intervention. She also later used her earnings for charitable purposes. As a result, Minister of Social Affairs Josef Hesoun and the President of the National Council, Heinz Fischer, announced a change in the law so that mandataries would not be able to receive unemployment benefits in future.

Traxler resigned on December 16, 1992 from the SPÖ club and was from December 17, 1992 to November 6, 1994 as a “wild member” in parliament. Later she was a board member of the Club of Independent Liberals .
