Even at secondary school, Hegemann was strongly encouraged in his artistic work by the young drawing teacher Theo Hölscher , who became a well-known painter of the New Objectivity . After graduating from high school, in 1929 Hegemann became a student at the art academy in Kassel near Witte and Nebel, and in 1931 he passed his teaching exams after 1 year of training at the Hildesheim teacher training institute, which was followed in 1932 by the state examination for the "artistic teaching post at secondary schools" at the Berlin Art College. In 1933, Hegemann passed the exam for the scientific subject geography at the University of Berlin with Krebs, then until 1935 the legal traineeship in Dortmund.

He did military service in World War II and was taken prisoner. Hegemann continued to paint during the war and helped improve the living conditions for his comrades in the camp in the USA while he was a prisoner of war by painting portraits for the families of the guards. Informal art

After the war, Josef Jupp Hegemann became an art teacher in Hagen, Schwelm, Altena and a teacher. As early as 1946, Hegemann co-founded the artist group Ring visual artists in Wuppertal and ran a small studio in Kierspe. In 1954 he moved to Altena where he lived until his death.

From 1956/57 beginning of experimental painting which lasted until his death. 1958 first exhibition of the Federal Republic of Germany after the war in Warsaw and Krakow with Wilfried Reckewitz, Otto Dix and others. In the painting style, architectural and experimental procedures predominated. Mixed techniques of oil, synthetic resin, sand, cardboard and other materials. Co-founder of the dap group in Nachrodt in 1965.

1968 First contemporary exhibition of the Federal Republic after 1945 in South Africa in the cities of Windhoek, Johannisburg, Pretoria and Cape Town with Karl Hermann, Fritz Mecking, Wilfried Reckewitz, Heinz Schönfeld and Waldemar Vienna, group dap.

In the spring of 1978 a new phase of work began. For him it is an event for which he cannot give any real reason. The reverse working method slowly developed from the individual to the whole. The details are of different sizes, sometimes a hatching with the black ballpoint pen, then a large round or square red spot in acrylic paint, often a black point in casein paint, then again a blue line with the crayon. The size of these details results from the duration of the meditating activity. Small and large periods of time create small and large parts of the picture according to the material. They lie next to and on top of each other in the picture space. All possible materials from drawing and painting alternate.

Josef Hegemann was involved in around 120 exhibitions in many countries and his work is owned by museums, collections and art lovers.
