biography

Jacober first became a master saddler and founded the first ski factory in Switzerland, which for a long time was also the largest. He was initially a supplier to Melchior Jakober, who from 1893 in Glarus was one of the first craftsmen in Switzerland to manufacture skis . The first ski club in Switzerland was founded in Glarus in 1893. From 1896 Josef Jacober himself produced skis with the name "Gotthardsoldat". One of the first large deliveries was made to an Alpini regiment in Italy.

In 1903 Jacober received the first Swiss patent for a ski binding . In 1908 the Jacober ski factory moved into two large buildings in a former textile factory in Glarus. Hickory wood from North America was used as the raw material for ski production . A large part of the production was mainly sold to the other Alpine countries but also to Chile and Japan. Annual production in the first quarter of the 20th century was 10,000–15,000 pairs of skis. In 1962 the ski production in Glarus was stopped.
