Josef Leithner

Josef Leithner (verifiably from 1770 to 1829) was an Austrian chemist and porcelain painter .

Leithner was a student at the Vienna Art Academy . From 1770 to 1829 he worked, initially under Conrad Sörgel von Sorgenthal (1784–1805), as head of painting at the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory . 1795 he discovered by calcination of aluminum sulfate and cobalt (II) nitrate , the cobalt blue , which is one of the finest and most durable porcelain colors. It is also known as Leithners Blau (incorrectly Leydener Blau ) or Thénards Blau . From 1793 he developed several bronze colors for porcelain, including Leithner Gold . From 1797 he was an arcanist , in 1812 he received the "Golden Medal with Eye and Ribbon", in 1829 he became director of the manufactory.
