Life

Josef Mohn was born as the son of the bottle maker Anton Mohn (1832–1885) and his wife Benedicta Gumper (1828–1887) von Schmiechen (Schelklingen) . The father Anton Mohn came from Daugendorf near Riedlingen and acquired Schelklingen citizenship on August 27, 1864, as he married and settled in Schelklingen a short time later on September 13, 1864. As recently as 1844, the Schelklingen city council was of the opinion that a Flaschner would have no employment opportunities in Schelklingen, but 20 years later the demand for Flaschner products seems to have increased so much that the city council allowed Anton Mohn to settle there. The increasing demand for flask work was due to the population growth and increasing construction activity. In addition, the 1840s were crisis years and the economic mood was clouded.

From before 1869 to 1872, the father Anton Mohn owned a part of the house at Färbergasse 7, 9, 11, 13, 15. The son Josef Mohn later bought the house at Langestraße 9 (today Bemmelbergergasse 9). In this spacious building he built a shop and a large workshop.

Josef Mohn probably learned the bottle-making trade from his father and also earned the master's title. He took an active part in Schelklingen's commercial and city life: he was a member of the city council. When Raiffeisenbank Schelklingen eG was founded on January 26, 1902, he was a founding member and first chairman of the supervisory board from 1902 to 1906. Mohn continued to be in command of the Schelklingen volunteer fire brigade (founded in 1871) from 1895 to 1910.

Family relationships

Mohn married in Schelklingen on August 31, 1891 with NN, from which marriage the two sons Johannes (Hans) and Anton emerged, who also learned the bottle-making trade and helped out in the father's workshop. The son Johannes, born in Schelklingen on June 21, 1900 later took over the family business.

Inventions and products

Mohn devised a large number of new technical developments, four of which became known: B. the "Eskimo", a "natural ice machine" for breweries, which was patented and sold by a company from Biberach in the 1920s. He also invented the "ideal", a lawn sprinkler. The third is the “Monius” (allusion to the family name “Mohn”!), An apparatus for assembling gutters and pipes. Most recently, he developed a special stovepipe with a lamellar shape that makes better use of the hot air. Other improvements and developments - apart from constructive improvements to tools - are not known. Mohn earned his living with regular bottle-making work. An artistic vein is evident in the execution of the gutters and downpipes on his own house, which were shaped as dragon heads.
