Josef Wolfsberger (born July 5, 1918 - † July 27, 2001 ) was a German taxidermist and lepidopterist .

Life

Wolfsberger lived in his Bavarian homeland, lived mainly in Miesbach and developed an interest in lepidopterology at an early age. Postponed from military service, Wolfsberger was employed during the Second World War (in 1943) at the Zoological State Collection in Munich as a taxidermist in the Lepidoptera ( butterflies ) section . At the same time, he researched the world of butterflies in Bavaria, with a particular preference for the Alpine region . This area has not been systematically researched since the publication of Ludwig Ostherler's work The Butterflies of Southern Bavaria and the adjacent Northern Limestone Alps in 1929. Wolfsberger has now updated the butterfly fauna according to modern criteria. His seven publications, New and Interesting Macrolepidoptera Finds from Southern Bavaria and the adjacent Northern Limestone Alps , bear testimony to this extensive faunistic work. He went on many excursions in the Alpine region with Franz Daniel . The extensive large butterfly fauna of the Lake Garda area (1965) and the Monte Baldo area (1971) set further standards for research into alpine fauna. At the Zoological State Collection of Munich, he worked until his retirement in 1980 in times of Walter Forster led entomological department. In July 1997 he handed over his 135,000 butterfly collection of unique quality and size to the Zoological State Collection in Munich.
