Franz Daniel ( December 20, 1895 - October 9, 1985 ) was a German curator and lepidopterist .

Life

Daniel's interest in lepidopterology, stimulated by his father of the same name, Franz Daniel , who had already dealt intensively with entomology , began at a young age. With interruptions due to two world wars , which he experienced as a soldier at the front, his interest in lepidopterology was unbroken. After the Second World War , he initially worked as a self-employed businessman, but was soon appointed as a curator at the Munich State Zoological Collection . There he worked in the entomological department headed by Walter Forster until his retirement . Even after his retirement, Daniel still worked as a volunteer at the State Zoological Collection. After he had initially dealt with large Palearctic butterflies in general , he specialized primarily in the Bombycoidea and bear moths (Arctiinae) and other spinner-like butterfly families , i. H. to all families that are dealt with in volume 2 of the Seitz work. In addition to taxonomic reallocations, Daniel was also a local faunist in Bavaria , at times active with Josef Wolfsberger and undertook various research trips abroad. For example, he described in detail the butterfly fauna of the Sausal Mountains . Daniel handed over his butterfly collection to Thomas J. Witt , which is now in the Museum Witt .
