Joseph P. Aucoin (born April 25, 1957 ) is an American Vice Admiral in the United States Navy and was in command of the Seventh Fleet until his replacement on August 23, 2017, which resulted in four accidents with multiple fatalities .

Military career

Aucoin attended North Carolina State University . He took part in the local reserve officer training program in 1980 and was accepted for pilot training in the US Navy after graduating from university in 1981.

He served as a flight instructor on board the aircraft carriers USS America and USS Nimitz and was ultimately responsible for the operations of Carrier Air Wing 8 as operations officer on the USS Theodore Roosevelt . Aucoin completed 4,700 flight hours as a pilot and more than 1,300 landings on aircraft carriers.

He served as the commanding officer on the carriers USS John F. Kennedy , USS Theodore Roosevelt , USS Kitty Hawk, and USS John C. Stennis .

Aucoin took on a staff role as Deputy Head of Warfare Systems (OPNAV N9) in May 2013 before being appointed Commander of the Seventh Fleet in Yokosuka in September 2015 .

After four accidents involving ships under his command, in particular the collisions of the destroyers USS Fitzgerald in June 2017 and USS John S. McCain in August 2017 with civilian vessels due to multiple casualties, Aucoin's detachment was announced on August 23. He is succeeded as Commander of the Seventh Fleet by Rear Admiral Phil Sawyer .
