Joseph Mösl (born January 13, 1821 in the Moosmühle in Köstendorf -Helming near Salzburg ; † November 9, 1851 there ) was a portrait painter and fresco artist who was born in Austria and worked in Germany.

His parents were farmers and millers. He was trained as a miller and passed the journeyman's examination in 1836. The Archbishop of Salzburg, Friedrich zu Schwarzenberg, noticed his talent for drawing on an excursion to the Tannberg and sent him to the painter Sebastian Stief to study in Salzburg , where he stayed from April 1, 1840 to August 1841.

From 1841 to 1846 Mösl, supported by Archbishop Friedrich zu Schwarzenberg, attended the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich , but was not entered in the register book.

From June 1846, under Johann von Schraudolph, he worked on the artistic design of the rebuilt Imperial Cathedral in Speyer (scenes from the life of St. Bernhard) for five years .

On May 1, 1851, Mösl returned seriously ill from Speyer to his home in Köstendorf and died there six months later at the age of 30. A marble plaque on the north wall of the cemetery commemorates this artist. A street in Köstendorf was also named after him.
