Joseph Oesterlé

Joseph Oesterlé (* 1954 in Alsace ) is a French mathematician who deals with number theory and arithmetic algebraic geometry .

Oesterlé studied from 1973 at the École normal supérieure and is a professor at the University of Paris VI (Pierre et Marie Curie). He was director at the Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris.

Oesterlé formulated the abc conjecture with David Masser in 1985 , one of the most important unsolved problems in number theory. He formulated it in the course of studies on criteria for the modularity of elliptic curves .

Loïc Merel is one of his doctoral students .

He was a member of Bourbaki .
