Joseph R. Garber

Joseph Rene Garber (born August 14, 1943 in Philadelphia , † May 27, 2005 in Woodside , California ) was an American author.

Garber's father was in the US Army , so he moved around a lot as a kid and turned to books early on. He attended the University of Virginia but dropped out to join the army like his father. After his service, he studied philosophy at East Tennessee State University and graduated in 1968. He then worked as a consultant for AT&T and Booz Allen Hamilton . He wrote for AT&T corporate magazine and in his spare time.

In 1984 Garber moved to Woodside, California after a long illness. He wrote articles for Forbes Magazine and worked as a consultant until he took a resignation as an opportunity to write full-time. His first novel, Rascal Money , was published in 1989 and deals with hostile takeovers of companies. It was initially conceived as a non-fiction book, but was rewritten on the advice of lawyers before publication by Garber.

His greatest success was the 1995 novel Vertical Run , which became an international bestseller.

Garber was married. He died of a heart attack at the age of 61.
