Life

Joseph Rott was born as the son of a "mercenary" and "farmer" in Loiting in the Isar district - today part of Hohenpolding, district of Dorfen in Upper Bavaria . After completing school and high school in Landshut , he studied classical philology, was transferred to the Eichstätt grammar school as assistant and teacher of arithmetic at the grammar school in Eichstätt in the school year 1846/47 and promoted to teaching here in the school year 1849/50. At his own request, he was transferred to the Latin School of the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich in the spring of 1851. In May 1855 he was appointed grammar school professor in Kempten, in April 1862 he was transferred to Passau and in 1866 the rector position in Eichstätt, which he held until his retirement in 1891. In addition, he taught Latin and Greek in high school. After taking office at the beginning of the school year 1866/67, he set about reorganizing the school's extensive library inventory. He determined the numbering of the books, which is still valid today, and created a first number repertory. In 1881 he completed the "Subject Catalog for the Gymnasium Library".
