Joseph Sun Jigen (born August 2, 1967 ) is a Catholic bishop of the Daming diocese . He is assigned to the underground church loyal to Rome .

Life

Joseph Sun Jigen entered the Taming (Handan) seminary in 1986. From 1994 he took over a lectureship there and was ordained priest in 1995. He was Ordinary Chancellor from 1997 to 2001 and Vicar General of the Diocese of Taming from 2001 to 2005. In 2005 he became pastor of Yongnian.

In 2007, the Holy See in Rome appointed him coadjutor to Bishop Yang Xiangtai . Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Taming in 2011. The appointment was made in coordination between the Holy See and the Chinese authorities, who, however , wanted to consecrate Joseph Guo Jincai , who was not authorized by Rome, as bishop. Joseph Sun Jigen was arrested by the state police before the scheduled episcopal ordination and after his release on June 21, 2011 he was consecrated underground by Stephen Yang Xiangtai with the knowledge of Rome .
