Joseph Wegstein

Joseph Henry Wegstein (born April 7, 1922 in Washburn , Illinois , † August 16, 1985 ) was an American computer scientist .

Life

At the University of Illinois he began studying physics, which he completed there in 1948 with a master's degree. He worked for the National Bureau of Standards (now NIST ), where he specialized in standards of automatic data processing and in particular technical recognition of fingerprints.

Joseph Wegstein took part in the conferences in Zurich in 1958 and in Paris in 1960, which resulted in the programming languages Algol 58 and Algol 60, respectively. As a participant in CODASYL , Wegstein was also involved in the development of COBOL .
