Joseph de Bray (* between 1628 and 1634 ; † May 16, 1664 in Haarlem ; also Josephus de Bray ) was a Dutch painter and draftsman.

life and work

Son of the painter Salomon de Bray and brother of Dirck , Jacob and Jan de Bray . He was certainly younger than his brother Jan and older than his brother Dirck. Presumably trained by his father, he mainly specialized in still lifes . In 1664 he died of the plague.

The earliest known evidence of his artistry is a small drawing of an Arcadian landscape dated February 14, 1650. Due to the uncertain lines, to be classified as a youth work. Today there are only a few works that can be ascribed to him with certainty. The best-known depiction is the “still life with the poem in praise of the pickled herring” , which has been preserved in several personal copies. Another picture has recently appeared on the international art market that is tentatively attributed to him. In addition to the few oil paintings, there are also a few drawings that are also associated with him.
