Joseph ibn Yaḥya ben David (* around 1495 in Florence ; † 1534 or 1539) was a Jewish scholar in Italy . His family came from Portugal .

Life

Joseph ibn Yaḥya ben David was born to Dina and David ibn Yaḥya ben Joseph. Any other information given by William H. Schab is apparently based on a mix-up. This couple is said to have fled Portugal in 1495, to get to Pisa and there by the troops of Louis XII. have been captured. Dina, who disguised herself as a man, was exposed and harassed, whereupon she jumped from a high roof, but is said to have later given birth to her healthy son Joseph in Florence . He wrote the theological-eschatological work Torah Ow , which was published in Bologna in 1538 . Joseph ibn Yaḥya ben David spent most of his life in Florence and Imola . Torah Ow was printed in the printing house of the Jewish silk weavers in Bologna, which existed from 1537 to 1540. In total, only nine books were published there.

  2. ^ William H. Schab, New York, Early Texts and Illustrated Books. Arts and Sciences of Six Centuries. Catalog 44 , Holland n.d., p. 38 f. describes him as the son of Dina and Gedalja ibn Yaḥya, who was only born in 1515, which is neither plausible in terms of the form of the name nor the date of birth. Schab also gives the year 1587 as the year of death. Presumably there is a mistake with Gedaliah ibn Yaḥya ben Joseph .
