Josephine Donovan

Josephine Campbell Donovan (born March 10, 1941 in Manila ) is an American author and emeritus literary scholar. She specialized in animal ethics , feminist critical theory , literary studies by American women writers with an emphasis on 19th century and early modern women's literature. Her work has been translated into Japanese, French, Turkish, Swedish and Chinese.

Josephine Donovan was evacuated as a child shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbor (December 1941) with her mother from a US base in the Philippines. Her father stayed behind and was captured by the Japanese army as a captain in the US Army. In 1998 Josephine published his memoirs about his time as a prisoner of war.

Donovan graduated from Bryn Mawr College with honors in 1962 in history. She then worked as a reporter for a small newspaper and as a copyist for the Washington Post . In addition, she attended a writing course at Columbia University . She received her Masters and PhD in comparative literature in 1967 and 1971 at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . She was then employed many times as an academic and worked as an editor for GK Hall in Boston. She recently retired from her position as Professor of English at the University of Maine, Orono, in order to devote more time to her writing activities. She currently (2011) lives on the New England coast .
