Josephine Oniyama is a British soul singer . She appears under the stage name Josephine .

Career

The daughter of a Liberian mother and a Jamaican father, Josephine Oniyama was born in a suburb of Manchester . She is known for her mix of soul , folk and pop and also plays the guitar . She got into music when her mother gave her a guitar at the age of twelve.

She released two EPs in her home country. She released her first EP, A Smaller Version of the Real Thing, in 2002. In the Labyrinth followed in 2008 .

She achieved greater success in October 2012 when she released her debut album Portrait in England . Well-known producers and musicians who worked on it are Leo Abrahams , Jerry Hogarth , Ed Harcourt and Seb Rochford . Her album was placed on Q magazine's 2012 list of the 50 best albums .

She presented the title song Portrait on the BBC television program Later with Jools Holland .
