The Josephinenschule- Oberschule in Chemnitz (formerly Fritz-Heckert-Oberschule) is located on Josephinenplatz.
It was founded in 1898. 768 students in 19 classes attended the school at that time. They were taught by a principal, a senior teacher, ten permanent teachers, and two assistant teachers who made up the teaching staff. The school used to be divided into two separate buildings for boys and girls.
However, during the Second World War , part of the school was destroyed when an air raid completely bombed the church in front of it . The Josephine School was reopened on November 6, 1997 thanks to funds from the EU's reconstruction initiative. After the closure of many schools throughout Chemnitz, this school is one of the few still fully functioning high schools.
On the night of March 16, 2007, a pipe stopper came loose in the chemistry room, allowing 10,000 liters of water to flow from the second floor to the basement. At that time, this fact caused a sensation and headlines in many media in Chemnitz and the surrounding area.
The Josephinenschule has been a full-day school since summer 2007.
