Josip Runjanin (also Josif, Josef or Joseph Runjanin; * December 8, 1821 in Vinkovci ; † February 2, 1878 in Novi Sad , Austria-Hungary ) was a lieutenant colonel in the Austro-Hungarian armed forces and composer . 25-year-old set to music the poem Runjanin 1846 Horvatska domovina (Croatian homeland) of the Croatian poet Antun Mihanović , which later under the title Lijepa naša domovino the Croatian national anthem should be. Runjanin's original score has been lost to this day. This is also one of the reasons that historians and musicologists repeatedly question the military musician's authorship of the composition. His father Ignjatije, a captain in the Austro-Hungarian armed forces, and his mother Sofija came from Kuzmin in Syrmia . Runjanin was baptized in the Serbian Orthodox Church of Silaska Svetog Duha in Vinkovci. On the advice of his father, he went to the military academy in Glina , where he demonstrated exceptional musical talent. Then he was accepted into the local military band and promoted. He began to compose various melodies based on popular Italian operas, of which the composition Ljubimo te naša diko with motifs from the opera L'elisir d'amore by Gaetano Donizetti also became popular.
