Joule is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by Cell Press, an imprint of Elsevier . It is the sister magazine of Cell , which has been published since 1974. The first edition appeared in September 2017, so an impact factor could not yet be determined. The editor-in-chief is Philip Earis, a physicist who previously helped launch Energy and Environmental Science ( Royal Society of Chemistry ).

The journal is marketed as a place for "groundbreaking energy research", which pursues a transdisciplinary approach and is intended to bring together various research disciplines from the energy sector.
