Journi Blog is a diary / blog app to automatically record and share personal experiences in the form of timelines (pages in the app to display content such as images, texts, videos in a chronological order) and to share them automatically with the help of machine learning convert into photo books . The two apps are operated by Journi GmbH, based in Vienna, Austria.

At the end of 2017, Journi had over 500,000 users.

In mid-2018 Journi had over 1,000,000 users.

The three founders Bianca Busetti (CPO), Christian Papauschek (CTO) and Andreas Röttl (CEO) met during an online course at Stanford University in 2012. A little later they started their first project, a marketplace for online travel guides. In 2014 the project ended without success. Since users of the marketplace also used the service for creating travel guides to record and share their own travel reports, the decision was made to build on it and develop a mobile app to record travel experiences. The aim was to make the creation of a travel diary or blog as easy and pleasant as possible for users. In June 2014 the app journi was offered for the first time for free download in the Apple App Store. As part of the Go Silicon Valley program of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce , the team moved from Vienna to San Francisco . Journi reached over 10,000 downloads within 10 weeks. The project was self-financed at this point and did not generate any revenue. The founding team therefore made the decision to cross-finance the project with other jobs and projects. In 2015 the app was also available in the Google Play Store. The app continued to grow organically. At the end of 2015, the app had over 50,000 downloads. In the summer of 2016 Journi GmbH received funding from Austria Wirtschaftsservice Gesellschaft in the amount of 400,000 euros and an investment from business angels, in particular from Johann Hansmann, the Shpock founders and Startup300 AG. The total amount of the financing round is estimated at around one million euros. At the end of 2016, the app stopped at over 120,000 downloads and the LA Times reported on the travel app for the first time. In 2017 the downloads increased fivefold to over 500,000. According to the founders, the growth is mainly organic (i.e. without the use of an advertising budget). In 2017, additional functions as premium services in the form of subscriptions were introduced for the first time and the possibility was created to automatically order digital content on journi as photo books. The second app, Journi Print, was launched in 2018 to give users faster access to the print functions.

In mid-2018, a new product will be launched on the market: Polaroid Prints. As an official partner of Polaroid, this Journi product also bears the brand name Polaroid. In October 2018, the Journi Photo Book Calendar was introduced in three formats. In 2019 another financing round was realized with MairDumont Ventures. The details are unknown. The apps are available for download worldwide in over 20 languages.

Products

The Journi app offers the following products:

Journi photo book

Since July 2017, users have been able to automatically order photos from various sources (local storage, Facebook, Instagram, Google Photos, Journi Blog) as photo books. The company relies on automation with the help of visual computing and machine learning. The complex layouting for users (creating a layout per page) is eliminated and saves time. According to the founder, the journi app creates a photo book with 500 pictures in less than 90 seconds. As of January 2018, the photo books are available in 3 formats: portrait, landscape (A4, A5) and square (21 × 21 cm) with soft or hard covers. The digital printing process is used .

Journi photo calendar

Since October 2018, users can also use the Journi apps to create photo calendars. The calendars are available in 3 formats: A4 portrait, A4 landscape and square (30 × 30 cm). The digital printing process is used.

Journi Polaroid Prints

As an official partner of Polaroid, Journi has been offering its users the opportunity to order photos as Polaroid prints since summer 2018. Dimensions and look and feel correspond to real Polaroids. In fact, the Polaroid prints are digitally printed and treated with UV varnish for the haptic using a Sodex machine.

Journi applies a zero plastic policy for print products. Only FSC-certified paper is used for printing. The packaging is made entirely without plastic in order to protect the environment.

criticism

The automation of processes such as the creation of travel reports and photo books in the journi app has advantages and disadvantages. Time savings are seen as a great advantage. A disadvantage is limited adaptability (flexibility). The latter has led journi to gradually open its products for manual adjustments in 2017. Changes in the timeline such as B. time and place, or changes to the photo book layout z. B. Hide content and change the position of content, possible.
