Jovan Ilievski

Jovan Ilievski (born July 3, 1958 in Tetovo ) is a North Macedonian lawyer , university professor and judge at the European Court of Human Rights .

Live and act

Ilievski studied law at the University of Skopje , where he graduated in 1983. In 1985 he was admitted to the North Macedonian bar. From 1988 he worked as a public prosecutor in Skopje. He gave up this position in 1993 and became a criminal defense lawyer until he returned to the prosecution in 1997. In 2004, he became head of the organized crime and corruption prosecution department there. From 2006 to 2017 he was also a member of the Consultative Council of European Prosecutors (CCPE) of the Council of Europe. In 2009 he took over the management of the North Macedonian Public Prosecutor's Office, which is responsible for combating organized crime and corruption. In 2011 Ilievski obtained a master's degree in criminal science from the University of Skopje and was awarded a Dr. iur. PhD. From 2013 to 2017 he taught as a professor at the University of Štip .

In October 2016 he was elected as the successor to Mirjana Lazarova-Trajkovska as representative of North Macedonia as judge at the European Court of Human Rights . This choice was not without controversy in his homeland. Human rights activists accused him of personal involvement in a corruption scandal involving the former secret police chief Saso Mijalkov. Nevertheless, Ilievski began his term of office at the ECHR on February 1, 2017, which is likely to last until 2026.
