Joy Ellis

Joy Ellis (* around 1990) is a British musician ( piano , e-piano , vocals ) and songwriter of modern jazz .

Live and act

Ellis graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama . After graduating, she toured worldwide; u. a. She has performed at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club , the Barbican Pit Theater in London, the London Jazz Festival and the No Black Tie Jazz Club in Kuala Lumpur. She was selected to work with the singer Eska on a composition artist in residence in Manchester. In 2016 she recorded her debut album Life on Land (F-IRE) with James Copus , Binker Golding , Rob Luft (guitar), Henrik Jensen (bass) and Adam Osmianski (drums) , followed by Dwell (O-tio, 2020). John Lewis ( The Guardian ) praised her skills as a songwriter; her lyrics are not added afterwards, but “poetic, impressionistic journeys, which are often told in the third person and often question the act of making music.” Her hardbop solos are well structured. The improvisational musicality hardly overwhelms the songs.

Ellis lives in London and teaches at New Morley College and the Junior Department of Guildhall School.
