Juaaka Lyberth

Karl Johan "Juaaka" Lyberth (born November 19, 1952 in Uummannaq ) is a Greenlandic musician and writer .

Life

Juaaka Lyberth was born in Uummannaq. He went to school in Greenland and Denmark and then studied Eskimology at the University of Copenhagen . For a time he was director of the Katuaq cultural centers in Nuuk and Taseralik in Sisimiut . He worked as a radio program editor and debater for a long time. In the 1990s he was a member of the Nuuk Municipality Council for the Siumut . Juaaka Lyberth is married to the politician Asii Chemnitz Narup (* 1954), with whom he has two adopted children from South Korea .

He started a music career in 1968. From 1978 he formed a band that brought out the LP Alle mine frænder . With Fam and Saarfaarsunnguit , he also released two albums with children's songs. After a long break he released the album Naasumikpaju in 2011 . His lullaby Sinigit meerannguaq , which he wrote in 1974, was used in the 2013 film Gravity .

In 2000 he received the Greenland Culture Prize . In 2012, Juaaka's debut novel Nalequsseruttortut was published . Two years later the book appeared in Danish under the name Godt i vej . It's about growing up in Greenland in the 1960s. In 2014 he was nominated for the Nordic Council's Literature Prize for this novel . His second book Orpilissat nunarsuarmi kusanarnersaat / Det smukkeste juletræ i verden was nominated for the Children's and Young People's Literature Prize of the West Nordic Council in 2020 .
