The Katuaq ( Greenlandic for drumstick ) is the cultural center of the Greenlandic capital Nuuk . The building is used for concerts , art exhibitions , conferences and as a cinema . The Katuaq is a joint project of the Greenland government , the former municipality of Nuuk and the Nordic Council of Ministers . The opening of the cultural center took place on February 15, 1997. The building belongs to the government and the Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq as the successor to the Nuuk Municipality.

architecture

The building was designed by the Danish architects Schmidt Hammer Lassen . It has a plan similar to a right-angled triangle , the hypotenuse of which is curved like a wave. The shape should be reminiscent of the northern lights . Wood and glass dominate as building materials . It has three floors and a basement. The large auditorium Hans Lynge Salen in the form of a circle , the small auditorium Lillesalen in the form of a square and the Café CaféTuaq in the form of an equilateral triangle are largely free-standing in the interior of the building .

Works of art by Aka Høegh , Buuti Pedersen , Isle Hessner and Aage Gitz Johansen are installed in the building.

The Nuuk Center , Greenland's first and so far only shopping center , is located directly to the north and, together with the Katuaq, forms a unit on the diagonal Imaneq Street.
