Juan Bautista Justo (born June 28, 1865 in Buenos Aires , † January 8, 1928 in Los Cardales , Provincia de Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine doctor and socialist politician .

Life

Justo was in contact with various socialist groups in the 1890s and made possible the publication of the magazine La Vanguardia , of which he soon became editor. The magazine helped unify the movement, and in 1896 the Socialist Party of Argentina was formed. Justo was one of the most important leaders of this party until his death in 1928, to whom he conveyed his special interpretation of socialism - according to the historian Lucas Poy that of “a moderate, reformist and parliamentary party which saw elections as an opportunity to improve the situation of the working class ".

After a brief hesitation, Justo supported the Allies against the Central Powers during World War I, which saved his party from a conflict with the commercial interests of the Argentine export industry. The reform-oriented course of the Argentine socialists caused the first left-wing divisions from 1917 in the wake of the October Revolution, from which the Communist Party of Argentina later emerged.
