Juan Corzo

Juan Corzo y Príncipe (born June 24, 1873 in Madrid , † September 27, 1941 in Havana ) was a Cuban chess master .

Corzo y Príncipe emigrated to Cuba in 1887 , where he became the best chess player in the country. He was the champion of the Havana Chess Club when he lost a competition for the Cuban championship 6: 7 (+3 = 6 −4) against 13-year-old José Raúl Capablanca in 1901 and thus went down in chess history.

Even after Capablanca's meteoric rise, Corzo y Príncipe remained one of Cuba's leading players and published the chess magazine Capablanca's Chess Magazine . Together with Capablanca he founded the Cuban Chess Federation.
