Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla

Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla (* around 1590 in Málaga , † 1664 in Puebla ) was a Mexican composer of Spanish origin.

Gutiérrez was trained at the Cathedral of Málaga by Francisco Vásquez , among others . Until 1621 he was Kapellmeister of the Cathedral of Cadiz . Then he emigrated to Mexico, where from October 1622 he was cantor and deputy conductor of the cathedral of Puebla, one of the most important churches in " New Spain ". In 1629 he became Kapellmeister in the succession of the late Gaspar Fernandes (1566–1629) for a salary of 500 pesos, plus 40 pesos for the composition of canzonets .

He composed a St. Matthew Passion , masses , motets , lamentations , including his famous Tristis est anima mea ( Mt 14.34  EU ), litanies , psalms and several polyphonic Villancicos . Around 700 works from his pen have been preserved.
