Juan Jiménez Mayor (born August 5, 1964 in Lima ) is a Peruvian lawyer and politician . He was Prime Minister of Peru from July 23, 2012 to October 31, 2013 . His successor was César Villanueva .

Life

Juan Jiménez Mayor studied law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and was subsequently admitted to the bar. He also obtained a master's degree in constitutional law . He has worked professionally in and beyond Peru, including as a consultant for the restructuring of the legal system in Nicaragua and the court fee system in Ecuador . He was also a senior advisor to the Organization of American States' election observation missions in Guatemala in 2007 and Paraguay in 2008 . In 2001 he was Peruvian Deputy Minister of Justice in the interim government of Valentín Paniagua Corazao after the end of the Alberto Fujimori government . He received the Peruvian Order of Civil Merit for his efforts to develop a strategy against corruption.

In August 2011 he returned to politics as Deputy Minister of Justice, and on December 11, 2011 he was appointed Minister of Justice and Human Rights. During his brief tenure, he was involved in moving Antauro Humala , the incarcerated brother of incumbent President Ollanta Humala , to another prison after the latter allegedly intimidated the guards. Since July 23, 2012 he has been Prime Minister of Peru, succeeding Óscar Valdés Dancuart , who resigned due to strong popular protests against the Conga gold mining project planned in the province of Celendín , which resulted in five deaths. Juan Jiménez Mayor is the third prime minister in President Humala's term of office, which began on July 28, 2011.
