Juan Martín de Ampiés or Juan Martínez de Ampués (* in Saragossa ; † February 8, 1533 in Hispaniola ) was a Spanish officer of the 16th century. He was regidor in Santo Domingo and founded Coro , the first city in Venezuela , in 1527 .

Juan Martinez de Ampíes was an officer in the Spanish army under Ferdinand II during the campaigns of the League of Cambrai in Italy. On May 19, 1511 the king appointed him trade agent for Hispaniola. The governor of Santo Domingo sent him to Venezuela to fight the slave trade in Indians that pirates operated in the region.

He arrived on the Coriana coast with 60 soldiers , concluded an agreement with the Kaziken Manaure and founded the city of Santa Ana de Coro on July 26, 1527 ( Annentag ).

When Charles I transferred the rule of Venezuela to the Welser , Ampíes had to return to Santo Domingo. The Welser took advantage of the situation to trade in slaves again and to violate the peace agreement with the Indians.
