Juan Tomás Martínez Abades (born March 7, 1862 in Gijón , Spain , † January 19, 1920 in Madrid ) was a Spanish painter, illustrator, composer and poet.

Life

Juan Martínez Abades showed talent for painting and music as a child. He received his school education at the Real Instituto Jovellanos in Gijón. His artistic talent was shown here, including copying drawings from the local collection. In 1880 he enrolled at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando de Madrid [School of Fine Arts San Fernando de Madrid], at the Escuela Especial de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado [special school for painting, sculpture and engraving]. At the same time he also received private lessons from Ignacio Suárez-Llanos (1830–1881) and the sculptor José Gragera (1818–1898) in their studios. He became Gardaga's assistant. In these first years he mainly painted landscapes, portraits and decorations. He also painted historical scenes such as La muerte de Mesalina [The Death of Messalina]. He submitted this painting to the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes [National Exhibition of Fine Arts] in 1884 . In the summer months he stayed in Gijón, where he specialized in marine motifs. In 1886 he painted his first sea painting. He was one of the hardest working students in the school. He submitted several paintings to national exhibitions until 1887. In 1888 he received a Diputación de Oviedo scholarship for a study trip to Rome. From 1888 to 1890 he lived in Rome and studied at the Accademia di San Luca . During this time he toured Italy, was in Venice, Genoa, Florence and Naples, visited many museums and exhibitions and found inspiration at the seaside and in many ports. After returning to Spain, he settled in Madrid. He started working as an illustrator for the newspaper Blanco y Negro . In the summer he continued to travel to the sea for nature studies. In 1890 he submitted the painting El Viático a bordo to the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes . For this he received a second class medal. In 1891 he exhibited at the International Art Fair in Berlin . In 1892 he received another second class medal. In 1893 he exhibited in Chicago . In 1901 he received his first first class medal at the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes , where he exhibited eight paintings. He also took part in the Exposiciones del Círculo de Bellas Artes [Exhibitions of the Circle of Fine Arts]. He worked as an illustrator for the magazines Blanco y Negro , La Caricatura and Madrid Cómico . In the last years of his life he mainly worked as an illustrator and song composer. His work was recognized and the royalties for his songs provided a comparatively high financial income. He continued to paint pictures with marine motifs, especially in his summer residence Ribadesella , but without the earlier success. In 1910 he exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Brussels, 1911 in Rome, 1914 in Havana and 1916 in Panama. In 1913 a large anthological exhibition of his works was organized in the Salón Iturrioz in Madrid. Until his death in 1920 he continued to create song compositions, illustrations and sea pictures.

Overall, he won several gold medals at the Exposiciones Nacionales de Bellas Artes . He was awarded the Cruz de Isabel la Católica [Cross of the Catholic Isabella]. On the occasion of its 150th birthday, the Museu del Pueblo d'Asturies published the book: Juan Martínez Abades. El pintor del cuplé. Because he was successful both as a painter and as a song composer, he was called Pintor del cuplé [couplet painter]. He was influenced by the landscape painter Carlos de Haes . He specialized in sunlit landscapes and ocean views.
