Judas Squidward sicklebone
Judas Thaddäus Sichelbein (born May 25, 1684 in Wangen ; † June 26, 1758 there ) was the last painter of the Sichelbein family of painters .
Life
Judas Thaddäus was born on May 25, 1684 in Wangen as the son of the Catholic painter Johann David Sichelbein . It is not known where he completed his training as a painter. On September 27, 1714 he applied for a marriage consensus and was married to Maria Magdalena Pfanner on September 30. Maria Magdalena was the daughter of a councilor of the city of Wangen, which brought Judas Thaddeus upwards. The dowry also gave him the financial means to set up a workshop.
The first tangible paintings by him were barrel work . In the collegiate church in Rheinau , he took the return positive. On September 5th he received the order to make a high altar for the monastery church of the Schussenried monastery . Since he was only a painter, he passed the carving and carpentry work on to subcontractors; the monastery only wanted to have the large figures carved itself. He finished this work when he received the final payment on September 13, 1718.
In 1720 Judas Thaddäus received his second major order. He also made a high altar for the Rheinau monastery, which was completed on March 15, 1723. However, there were disputes with the subcontractors who were responsible for the wood and carving work. This culminated in an application to the city council of Wangen.
In 1723 he was entrusted with the high altar for the new construction of the monastery church of St. Martin of the Weingarten monastery , and he was also to redesign two side altars and an iron grille. In total, the contract was worth 5500 guilders .
Then he worked again in Rheinau, Switzerland. These were probably all the complete altar structures that were given to him, at least no other ones are available. All future paintings are only barrel paintings. In 1727 he was allowed to marble 32 columns in the imperial hall and gild figures in the Ottobeuren Abbey . In the future the monastery became one of his biggest clients. So he was employed again in Ottobeuren from 1732 to 1734. He and his journeymen received free food.
In 1738 he worked in the pilgrimage church in Eldern. From 1735 Judas Thaddäus worked several times for the Counts of Waldegg, then for the parish church in Kißlegg until 1741. For the new building (1741–1749) of the monastery church of the Ofteringen monastery , he designed the side altars and the high altar with the choir wall. After that he did not reappear until 1754 when he argued about an order before the Wangen council.
Judas Thaddäus died in Wangen on June 26, 1758. Of his nine children, only four survived the first few years. However, none of the children appeared as painters. This ended the 180-year long family tradition of painting.
