Judas brings back the 30 pieces of silver (also called The repentance of Judas ) is a painting by Rembrandt , which depicts the incident described in Mt 27.3  LUT : “When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned to death , he regretted his act. He brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders ”. The painting is one of the earliest in Rembrandt's work. When it was created in 1629, he was still working in Leiden .

The painting was particularly appreciated by his contemporaries because of the violent emotions that can be read in the gestures and facial expressions of the tortured Judas figure. Compared to the lavish drapery and furniture of the high priests, Judas appears poor and troubled by his conscience. His cheeks are covered with tears and his head is bloody from pulling his hair out. Rembrandt's work The Prodigal Son continues with the depiction of an anti-hero, whose repentance becomes the core message of the painting.

The painting is now in the Mulgrave Castle Collection in Lythe, North Yorkshire .
