Judita Čeřovská (born April 21, 1929 in Brüx as Judita Štěrbová; † October 9, 2001 in Prague ) was a German- Czech pop and chanson singer .

Life

As a child, Štěrbová lived in Most / Brüx in northern Bohemia. She stayed there with her German grandmother even after the occupation of the Sudeten areas in 1938 and attended the German school. Her parents lived near Prague in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia . Because she was listening to foreign radio, she was reported and imprisoned for several months. Before graduating from a commercial school, Štěrbová performed publicly with school bands. At the age of 27, she started her semi-professional career as the wife of a lawyer and mother of two children.

She took second place in a competition for young talents and shortly afterwards began to sing regularly in the Alhambra music hall in Prague. Čeřovská never became a full-time singer, even though she recorded a number of successful hits. In 1959, she was seriously injured in a car accident, from which she was able to recover. Without regular collaboration with a large dance orchestra or a renowned songwriter, she was not perceived as a pop star in Czechoslovakia. It became popular abroad.

In the Federal Republic of Germany she gave concerts and also designed a TV program. It was also successful in other European countries. In 1967 Čeřovská sang with some Czechoslovak music colleagues, including Karel Gott, at the world exhibition EXPO in Montreal . She declined an offer of engagement for appearances in the USA for family reasons. Since 1989 Judita Čeřovská switched to jazz, swing and chanson.
