Judith Lauand

Judith Lauand (born May 26, 1922 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian graphic artist and painter . She is considered to be the pioneer of the Brazilian modernist movement that began in the 1950s. She was the only female representative of the Grupo Ruptura, the art movement in São Paulo that showed concrete art with mathematical, geometric shapes in Brazil.

Life

In 1950 Lauand received a degree in fine arts from the Art School in Araraquara , São Paulo, Brazil. She then worked as a teacher in Araraquara and moved to São Paulo in 1953. In 1954 she worked at the 2nd International Biennale in São Paulo and in 1955 she was invited by Waldemar Cordeiro (1925–1973) to join the Grupo Ruptura as the only female member. She participated in group exhibitions, including 1955–56 at the III São Paulo Biennale, the first national exhibition for concrete art in 1956 and 1960 at the international retrospective Konkretismus, Concrete Art: 50 Years of Development, organized by Max Bill in Zurich in the year 1960. In 1958 she received the Leirner Prize for Contemporary Art. Lauand worked with many different media. As a painter, she created works from acrylic, enamel, oil and tempera paints with gouaches and collages. Her works also include embroidery, sculpture, woodcuts, and tapestries.
