The house BBC Youth Club or tube is a finished in 2011 new children's and youth recreational facility for the "Bernhard Bästlein Club" (BBC) in the district of Berlin-Fennpfuhl of Lichtenberg . The building ensemble consists of a completely rebuilt pedestrian tunnel opened in 1976 under the Weißenseer Weg near the intersection with the Herzbergstrasse and its access building on the east side of the Weißenseer Weg. The new postal address is TUBE Jugendklub Herzbergstrasse 160. The club, founded in 1992, had its domicile at Bernhard-Baestlein-Strasse 3. Since January 1st, 2008, the BBC Youth Club has been sponsored by the Social Diaconal Youth Work Lichtenberg eV

History of the club building

When the new development area, then still called Lichtenberg-Nord , was built in the 1970s , an underground access to the median of the Weißenseer Weg with the stops of several tram lines was created. It could be used from the west and east side of the street via stairs or ramps. In the middle there was a stairway to the stops. After the reunification , the western side of the street was built on the area of the former Roederplatz with a shopping center ( called CityPointCenter ), which now has a street crossing at the same level. With this the tunnel lost its actual meaning and became a target of vandals , was also used for urinating or as a hiding place for the illegal cigarette dealers. BVV Lichtenberg closed the passage in 2000.

Consideration was now to be given to completely eliminating the tunnel and filling it up or finding another use for it. The exit on the east side of the street ended in a low-rise building that had also contained a newsagent. So the idea finally arose to redesign the low-rise building after extensive renovation and to make the spacious tunnel usable as a discotheque . The association “Social Diaconal Youth Work” was found to operate, which was able to raise the required sum of around 300,000 euros with interested young people, a sponsor and a district-owned financing option. BVV Lichtenberg issued the building permit in 2009.

Naming, renovation work and inauguration

The renovation work could begin in August 2010. The common name was "Tube" (from the English tube). Sprayers made this planning progress known with a graffiti picture on a parking lot wall next to the eastern tunnel entrance. The area was tidied up and redesigned in a public action, then the renovation of the low-rise building began and the underground facilities were torn down, rebuilt and renewed.

On September 14, 2011, the club officially moved into the new premises, which encompass around 340 m², while civil engineering work on the western side of the street was drawing to a close with the demolition of the tunnel access. What was left was a simple, newly bricked-up emergency exit, the stairs to the tram were removed and a large ventilation shaft installed in its place.

The leisure facility will continue to be marketed under the name of its main operator "BBC Youth Club". (The name has nothing to do with the British broadcaster BBC .) In autumn 2011, the sprayers went back to work and designed the walls near the entrance house, which is clad with colored tiles, with imaginative sketches from the history of the Lichtenberg district and the words “BBC Youth Club ".
