The Weißenseer way is a busy north-south road between the Berlin districts of Pankow (district of Weissensee ) and Lichtenberg (district Fennpfuhl ). The road has existed for more than 150 years and was the connection between the villages of Weißensee and Lichtenberg at the time.

location

The street begins north as a continuation of Indira-Gandhi-Straße , then crosses the intersection of Hohenschönhauser Straße / Konrad-Wolf-Straße , then forms a large intersection with Landsberger Allee and ends south at the intersection of Herzbergstraße on Roederplatz.

Although the Landsberger Allee even broader and not one of a tram traffic Arterial Road represents the Weißenseer way traffic as standard here the main road , which at traffic lights failure has often led to the crossing to traffic accidents.

The northern section touches with its eastern side (house number range 51-55) the district Alt-Hohenschönhausen . Here is the Olympic base - the Sportforum Hohenschönhausen . The south-western area of the road runs along the Fennpfuhlpark for around 300 m .

history

After 1862, the village connecting street was designated as Gürtelstraße according to the Hobrecht plan , because it was supposed to form a section of the street surrounding the entire city center of Berlin. Around 1920 the traffic route shown here was given the name Weißenseer Straße in a short northern section and the name Weißenseer Weg in the middle and southern section . Since the 1930s, the entire street has been called the Weißenseer Weg. At the time, it was more likely a path that ran between the Wilhelmsberg colony (now part of Alt-Hohenschönhausen ) and the undeveloped areas around the Fennpfuhl .

Ho Chi Minh Street; in the picture as a cross street of the then Leninallee (today again Landsberger Allee), 1984

After the new building area Lichtenberg (Nord), as the current district was called at the time, had been completed, this path was named Ho Chi Minh Street by the Berlin magistrate in honor of the Vietnamese President Ho Chi Minh . The residents and their guests had some difficulties with the spelling of the street name over the years, and terms such as Hoschimin-Straße or Hoch-im-Inn-Straße also appeared.

After the political change , the Lichtenberg district office implemented the recommendations of the Berlin Senate to rename streets. The street was now called Weißenseer Weg zurück. The term path is, however, misleading because since the late 1970s it has been a 25-meter-wide promenade planted with greenery (bushes, trees).

traffic

In its entire length, the Weißenseer Weg has at least two lanes on both sides, the middle is occupied by a separate tram route. The tram tracks had to be renewed several times in the past decades. It operate the line M13 and on a section line sixteenth

Since 2013, there are bicycle traffic facilities on both sides of all sections. In the northern section, construction cycle paths run separately from the sidewalk, in the southern section cyclists are guided on shared footpaths and cycle paths. Various forms of guidance exist in the middle section - on the east side a cycle lane was marked here in July 2013.

Special features, buildings

Dynamo sports hall (today part of the sports forum ) shortly after its completion, 1958

In the interior of the residential buildings on the east side, the access road bears the same name. The residential buildings form continuous streets and are predominantly of the panel type P2 / 11 .

Today's hotel complex, consisting of three 18-storey prefabricated buildings, was built in the mid-1970s as a workers' hostel. This included a low-rise building directly on the northeast side of the intersection of Weißenseer Weg and Landsberger Allee, which was open to workers and new residents as the Suhler Eck restaurant . After 1990 the restaurant was demolished and a two-storey connecting structure was installed between the three high-rise buildings. The restaurant opened there was named Wilhelmsberg and was reminiscent of the villa colony of the same name that used to exist here. The intended use of the connecting building as a new business center could not establish itself sufficiently because of the residential buildings that stand apart. Essentially, the settlement of a few medical practices remained. The hotel and with it the restaurant have changed owners and names several times since the 2000s. Currently (as of May 2019) the hotel is called City Hotel Berlin East and the guest room with the most seats is called Grenzlos .

In the Wilhelmsberg colony lived u. a. also the Jew Schmul Franz Switytzki, whose fate is reminded of a stumbling block that was laid around the year 2000 . This is located on the footpath approximately at the level of the following car dealership, today's house number 23/24.

A car repair shop for Lada vehicles had already settled here in the mid-1970s. From the end of 1990 it became an Opel dealership, only later did the management specialize in Renault with the subsidiary Dacia .
