The Youth Symphony Orchestra of the Städtische Musikschule Braunschweig (JSO) is a German youth symphony orchestra that has dedicated itself in particular to the interpretation of contemporary orchestral works in order to make a contribution to communicating new music to young musicians and the audience.

history

Approx. In 1950 a music school orchestra was founded, from which today's Youth Symphony Orchestra (JSO) emerged. Its membership varies between 50 and 80 musicians. The line-up changes completely every 5 - 6 years. Knut Hartmann has directed the Youth Symphony Orchestra since 1984.

Since 1991, the JSO has represented Lower Saxony seven times as the winner of the state orchestra competition at the German orchestra competition, which is held every four years . It has regularly placed itself among the five best youth symphony orchestras in Germany and each time it has been awarded the special prize for the interpretation of a contemporary work. This was most recently achieved in May 2016 in Ulm with the orchestral piece “Karanga” by Maximilian Guth .

Every year the orchestra organizes the opening concert for the Braunschweiger Musikschultagen, which is Braunschweig's largest youth music festival with around 600 participants, the New Year's concert in Wolfsburg, the traditional carnival concert festival and special and benefit concerts. It also appears in the Braunschweig State Theater as part of children's concerts and youth theater pieces.

The largest performances include the 2007 German Requiem by Johannes Brahms with the Landesjugendchor Niedersachsen , the Concerto for Group and Orchestra by Deep Purple keyboarder Jon Lord , Bruckner's 4th symphony, as well as symphonies 2 and 3 by Brahms and symphonies 2 and 6 by Beethoven .
