A youth symphony orchestra is a special form of a symphony orchestra and serves the musical education of young people as well as the professional preparation for future orchestra musicians. In contrast to other forms of youth orchestras, it is characterized by the symphonic instrumentation ( strings , woodwinds , brass and percussion ), which is primarily geared towards the repertoire of the great symphonies of classical music. The transitions to other orchestral formations are fluid.

Organization, forms

Regional orchestras

Youth symphony orchestras are institutionally anchored on different levels. On the regional level, which enables regular rehearsals, on the one hand larger urban music schools offer their suitable students the opportunity to participate in such a formation in addition to instrumental lessons. Examples include the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Braunschweig , the Youth Symphony Orchestra of the Tonhalle Dusseldorf , the Youth Symphony Orchestra of the Rheinische Musikschule in Cologne , the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Leipzig and the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Marzahn-Hellersdorf . Other orchestras can be found e.g. B. at the music schools in Bochum , Bonn , Solingen , Dresden and Mannheim . On the other hand, some grammar schools offer their students this orchestra formation, such as the Edertal School in Frankenberg or the Georg-Friedrich-Händel-Gymnasium in Berlin. The orchestras are usually offered to young people between the ages of 14 and 24. Some orchestras already accept children from the age of 12 and the upper age limit is usually not applied rigidly. With the school symphony orchestras, participation is tied to school days. In the descriptions, the joy of making music together is emphasized as the goal, but the orchestras are also performance-oriented, organize concerts and take part in competitions. The importance of the orchestra for a later career as a musician is often emphasized and demonstrated by examples. The mostly weekly rehearsal work is usually supplemented by so-called orchestra camps, which can also take place at other locations with appropriate rehearsal and overnight options, such as B. the regional music academies . They often take place before the concerts to intensify rehearsals.

Supraregional orchestras

In Germany, the state music councils organize youth symphony orchestras at state level. They see themselves as a selection orchestra. The level of performance expected of the young people is correspondingly higher. The rehearsals are organized in orchestra weeks during the school holidays . The semi-professional work of these regional orchestras is financed by the federal states. The state youth orchestras in Bavaria , Berlin , Brandenburg , Bremen , Hesse , Lower Saxony , Saarland , Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia are explicitly understood as symphony orchestras, regardless of their name . In the other federal states, the state youth orchestras are not specified in detail in terms of the cast and the corresponding repertoire. Cooperation with professional symphony orchestras, guest conductors and musicians from the non-classical branches of musical life is maintained.

At the federal level, the Federal Music Council organizes the Federal Youth Orchestra . The supraregional orchestras are financed by state and federal funds as well as by sponsors from business and society. In other countries, youth symphony orchestras are organized differently on regional and supra-regional levels (see list below). A special feature is the NRW Children's Orchestra , which also has a symphonic line-up and is aimed at children between ten and fourteen years of age.

There are orchestra projects across countries that also have a socio-political claim. The German-Polish Youth Symphony Orchestra Görlitz / Zgorzelec was founded to contribute to overcoming the historically troubled past of the two countries through cross-border cooperation. The European Union organizes the interdisciplinary youth orchestra of the European Union . The project of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra , in which Israeli and Palestinian youths play music together, is well known.

Goals and Achievements

The youth symphony orchestras belong to the field of amateur music and are often continued by the former members through participation in university orchestras . The goal setting varies, depending on the orchestra, between general goals of youth education, those of amateur musicians, and advanced professionalization. The cooperation with the regular symphony orchestras makes it clear that the youth symphony orchestra can also serve as a professional preparation for a later career as an orchestral musician .

The youth symphony orchestras successfully organize regional concerts, travel with the rehearsed programs, often abroad, and are increasingly being booked by professional concert organizers. This increases the pressure to perform and there is competition between the orchestras, which is also viewed critically.

Youth big band

In jazz, the youth symphony orchestra corresponds to the youth big band , which is a special form of a big band .

Competitions, festivals

An orchestra competition is held annually for youth symphony orchestras and symphonic youth wind orchestras and the German Youth Orchestra Prize of Jeunesses Musicales Germany is awarded. The average age of the orchestra members must be under 27 years.

The youth symphony orchestras also take part in the orchestra competition of the German Music Council.

The German Circle of Friends of European Youth Orchestras V. annually organizes the Young Euro Classic in Berlin, an international music festival for youth symphony orchestras from all over the world.
