tasks and goals

As an excellence initiative of the state government, the NRW Children's Orchestra promotes talented musicians between the ages of ten and fourteen who want to get involved in an orchestra well beyond instrumental lessons. The children and young people meet during the work phases on weekends and during the holidays and work on symphonic literature in the original or an adaptation. The aim of intensive orchestral work is to strengthen and consolidate the musical, social and personal skills of its young members. It is one of nine youth ensembles of the State Music Council of North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The orchestra was founded in September 2006 and was initially supported by the Bochum Music School. From March 2008 to December 2012, the orchestra was under the name KinderOrchesterRuhr under the sponsorship of the Every Child One Instrument Foundation in Bochum. The orchestra's first appearance was in the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum in 2007 . Appearances in numerous other cities in the Ruhr area, but also in Paderborn, Wuppertal and in the park of the Federal Chancellery followed. In 2010 it played with Herbert Grönemeyer in the ZDF program "Glück Auf Ruhr.2010 - Die Show." In the same year, a selection from the orchestra was able to present Handel's fireworks music with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in the Dortmund Konzerthaus under the direction of Ton Koopman . In November 2016 it celebrated its tenth anniversary with former members with a concert in the newly opened Musikforum Ruhr . Highlights in 2017-2018 were appearances in the Cologne Philharmonic, the Essen Philharmonic, the Duisburg Theater and the Anneliese Brost Musikforum Bochum.

Conductors

The orchestra has been conducted so far by Samuel Bächli ( Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen), Barbara Rucha ( Leipzig University of Music ), Gottfried Engels ( Cologne University of Music ), Bernd Wilden ( Bielefeld Theater ), Witolf Werner ( Vienna State Opera ), Achim Fiedler (Dortmund Music School), Silke Löhr and Andreas Fellner. Andreas Fellner has been chief conductor of the NRW Children's Orchestra since 2018.

structure

The size of the orchestra and thus the line-up fluctuates from work phase to work phase. Usually the orchestra has between 75 and 80 members. The recruitment of new orchestra members happens i. d. R. about the music schools of the state and the regional and state competition " Jugend musiziert ". These are written to before the start of the work phase and asked to suggest young and talented young musicians for the orchestra. Students are also invited through other referrals. In the registration documents, candidates are asked to provide brief information on their musical experience (length of lessons, orchestral experience, works played). An initial assessment is made on this basis.

New members are invited to an audition before the first trial weekend. There they rehearse and perform together with the conductor and the lecturers of the respective vocal groups. The criteria for the final selection are, in addition to the instrumental ability, above all comprehension, adaptability in the group, resilience and social behavior.

Work phases

The rehearsals of the NRW Children's Orchestra take place in blocks on weekends. There is also a five-day orchestra tour during the school holidays. At the beginning of the work phase, in addition to the tutti rehearsals, intensive rehearsals take place in the instrumental groups, which are led by music teachers who are also present to support the tutti rehearsals. In addition to the conductor and the specialist lecturers, other supervisors travel with the members to look after the members and organize the leisure program. A fee is charged for participation in the work phase.

program

As a basis for the developed and performed program, printed arrangements of well-known works are mostly chosen, which may be arranged for the special line-up of the NRW Children's Orchestra. In addition, some shorter original works are also rehearsed.

Concerts

The NRW children's orchestra presents itself at the end of each work phase in three to four moderated family concerts. Either music-dramatic works are performed in the form of music plus narration, or programs are designed for which individual works are combined into a dramaturgical unit by means of a text. As the conductor, Witolf Werner took on the conceptual implementation of the concerts as well as the moderation.

The respective performance locations depend on the program orientation of the respective working phase of the orchestra.
