Jules Léon Dutreuil de Rhins (born January 2, 1846 in Saint-Étienne , Loire department , † June 5, 1894 in Tibet ) was a French geographer and researcher .

Life

Jules Rhins was midshipman an expedition to Mexico and Ensign during the French German War . From 1871 to 1876 he was the captain of a foreign ship and commanded the Scorpion of King Annam's Navy in 1876 ​​and 1888 . In 1882 he worked as the Egyptian correspondent for the newspaper Le Temps and from 1891 to 1894 he explored the Chinese Turkestan (East Turkestan) as well as the inaccessible areas of northern and western Tibet . In 1894 he was murdered in a small town in eastern Tibet.
