Jules Louis Machard
Jules Louis Machard (born September 22, 1839 in Sampans , † September 27, 1900 in Meudon ) was a French history and portrait painter .
Life
Machard studied with Émile Signol (1804-1892) and Ernest Hébert at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1865 he was awarded the Prix de Rome for his painting "Orpheus in the Underworld". The prize was combined with a scholarship and a longer study visit to the Villa Medici in Rome. His painting "Angélique attachée au rocher" was exhibited in the 1869 Salon .
Tomb
Jules Louis Machard is buried in Meudon on the Cimetière des Longs Réages . The representative tomb made of white marble with various allegorical figures, including an allegory of painting and a medallion with the portrait of Machard, is the work of 1904 by his uncle, the sculptor Gustave Crauk.

In addition to large-format oil paintings and portraits in oil and pastel, Marchard also left numerous drawings. Marchard, whose mythological pictures show the first signs of symbolism , was an excellent portrait painter. In addition to children, he mainly portrayed the sophisticated ladies of the Belle Époque of France in their lavish evening wear, in which he captured fabrics, jewelry, furs, hair and the sensuality of the flesh with painterly sophistication and color brilliance. He is famous in literature for his portrait of a “young woman in an evening dress with hydrangeas”, which is the subject of discussion in the Verdurin Circle in the first volume of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time .
Machard's paintings are now in museums in Dole, Besançon, Strasbourg, Chartres and Rouen.
