Emile Signol
Émile Signol (born May 8, 1804 in Paris , † October 4, 1892 in Montmorency (Val-d'Oise) ) was a French church painter and art teacher.
Signol studied at the École des beaux-arts de Paris with Merry-Joseph Blondel and Antoine-Jean Gros . He made his debut in 1824 with a painting "Joseph Telling His Brothers His Dream". For the painting "Titulus Crucis" he received the Prix de Rome . During his stay at the Villa Medici , he portrayed the composer Hector Berlioz . He stayed in Rome until 1835.
In 1842 he painted the "Death of Saphira" for the church of Sainte Madeleine and was then commissioned to decorate the churches of Saint Roch, Saint Sévérin, Saint Eustache and Saint Augustin. Four of his paintings are in the Saint Sulpice Church in Paris. Signol was made a Knight in 1841 and an Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1865 .
He was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1860.
His students included Étienne Prosper Berne-Bellecour , Marie Bracquemond , Edouard Castres , Edmond Grandjean , Jean Lecomte du Nouÿ , Jules Louis Machard , Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and Pierre-Auguste Renoir ,
