Julian Gutt (born before 1983) is a German biologist and polar and marine researcher.

Life

Julian Gutt studied at the University of Kiel and at the Institute for Marine Research (1983, diploma). He received his doctorate in 1987 at the Institute for Polar Ecology at the University of Kiel . He has been working for the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven (AWI) since 1987 .

Julian Gutt completed his habilitation in 2001 at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg , Institute for Biology and Environmental Sciences (IBU), and has been an adjunct professor there since 2005.

Julian Gutt has been researching the ecology of the Southern Ocean for over 30 years. The focus is on the observation of reactions of the diversity of life and the ecosystem functions and services on the sea floor to environmental changes. He has taken part in numerous large Arctic and Antarctic research expeditions with the Polarstern and was twice expedition and project manager. He leads since 2013 as "Chief Officer" the biology program "Antarctic Thresholds - Ecosystem Resilience and Adaptation" (AnT-ERA) of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, SCAR). He is a member of the advisory board “Antarctic Climate and the Environment” (ACCE) and co-editor of the report of the same name. He played a leading role in the Census of Antarctic Marine Life (CAML) research program and is the author of the global assessment of the "Intergovernmental Panel on Scientific Policy Advice on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services" ( IPBES ).

Julian Gutt is also interested in the use of undisturbed scientific methods, such as underwater photography and video, environmental and nature conservation in the Southern Ocean, and the transfer of knowledge from scientists to users of research results, especially in connection with climate change.
