Julian Rappaport

Julian Rappaport is an American psychologist who introduced the concept of empowerment to social work and social psychiatry .

Rappaport is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana . He received his doctorate ( Ph.D. ) from the University of Rochester . Against the background of the crisis in the US welfare state, he has been working on concepts for community psychiatry since 1977. His main work on the concept of empowerment is the book Studies in Empowerment: Steps Toward Understanding and Action , published in 1984 . A sentence by Rappaport, which is often quoted in German debates about inclusion , is: "To have rights, but not to dispose of resources and services is a cruel joke."
