Julian Rentzsch
Julian David Johannes Rentzsch (born August 1, 1975 in Mainz ) is a German Turkologist .
Life
Rentzsch was born in Mainz in 1975 as the second child of a family of teachers. He studied from 1994 to 2002 at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Bonn , the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt and the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and joined this in 2002 his studies in the fields of Indology , comparative linguistics and Turkish studies with the master’s degree. On the advice of the Norwegian Turkologist Bernt Brendemoen , who at that time represented the Mainz chair, he began a doctoral project in Turkish linguistics with his doctoral supervisor Lars Johanson in the same year . At the same time, he also attended numerous courses with Hendrik Boeschoten , Johanson's successor at the Mainz chair. Rentzsch completed his doctorate in 2005 with a dissertation on New Uyghur . From 2009 to 2012 he carried out research as a Humboldt Fellow at the University of Szeged (Hungary). In 2014 he completed his habilitation in Turkish Studies at the University of Mainz. From 2016 to 2017 he was a research fellow in Skopje (Macedonia). In July 2017 he was appointed professor for Turkish linguistics at the Johannes Gutenberg University and has since headed the department for Turkish studies at the Institute for Slavic Studies, Turkish Studies and Circumbarian Studies.

Rentzsch's main areas of work are comparative linguistic Turkology, typology , linguistic history, semantics , syntax and modern Turkish literature.
In his book Aspect in New Uyghur , published in 2005 , he examines the finite and non-finite aspect operators in modern Uyghur based on Johanson's aspect model.
In his second monograph Modality in the Turkic languages (2015), the modal categories common in the Turkic languages are examined according to functional and semantic criteria and a descriptive model suitable for this language family is proposed.
Rentzsch speaks English, Norwegian and Turkish and has advanced knowledge of Ottoman Turkish, Chaghatai, Kazakh, Uzbek and Uighur. He also has knowledge of languages such as ancient Greek, Latin, Hindi, Russian, Macedonian and Hungarian.
