Julianne Dalcanton (born January 29, 1968 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American astronomer .

Life

She is an associate professor in astronomy at the University of Washington , Washington, and a researcher on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey . Her main work deals with the formation and evolution of galaxies. She currently leads the ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury (ANGST) program at the Hubble Space Telescope .

She became internationally known as the discoverer of comet C / 1999 F2, which was also named after her. In 2012 the asteroid (148384) Dalcanton was named after her. For 2018 she was awarded the Beatrice M. Tinsley Prize .

Dalcanton is married and has two children.
