Julio Montaner

Julio SG Montaner (* 1956 ) is an Argentinian-Canadian doctor, known for clinical studies on AIDS .

Life

Montaner, the son of a lung specialist, studied medicine at the University of Buenos Aires with an MD degree in 1979. As a post-doctoral student and for residency in internal medicine and pulmonary medicine, he was at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver . In 1986/87 he was chief resident there and from 1987 director of the AIDS research program at St. Paul's Hospital and the University of British Columbia. In 1997 he became professor of medicine there. He is the director of the British Columbia Center for Excellence in HIV / AIDS .

In the 1980s he developed effective therapies for the pneumonia Pneumocystis jirovecii, which occurs in AIDS patients . In the 1990s he played a key role in establishing HAART as the standard therapy against AIDS. In the 2000s, he was involved in a prevention strategy against AIDS by the Canadian government, which aims to target particularly high-risk people (STOP = Seek and Treat for the Optimal Prevention of HIV / AIDS ).

He is on the Council of the International Aids Society.

In 2010 he received the Albert Einstein World Award of Science . In 2002 he received the $ 1 million Distinguished researcher Award in HIV . In 2010 he received the Order of British Columbia . In 2009 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada . Montaner's induction into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame was announced in April 2015.

He is married and has four kids.
